Compare the whole stop, including the return
An Italian autostrada is a motorway. A station that looks close to an exit may still require driving through junctions and local roads before you can rejoin in the right direction. Compare that whole diversion with a station accessible from your existing route.
Use the same fuel and service type at both options. Self and servito are self-service and attended service, and their prices can differ. MIMIT publishes national motorway averages, but an average is background information rather than a quote for your next service area. The relevant comparison is between the actual stations you could use.
Work out the size of the opportunity
Consider a hypothetical petrol fill of 40 litres, with an off-motorway station €0.15/litre cheaper than the suitable motorway option. The gross difference is 40 × €0.15 = €6.00.
Assume the diversion adds 10 km, the vehicle uses 6 litres/100 km, and that extra fuel is valued at €1.80/litre. Extra fuel costs 10 × 6 ÷ 100 × €1.80 = €1.08, leaving €4.92 before any toll difference or value assigned to your time. All figures are assumptions, not current prices or a savings prediction.
An exit and re-entry can affect the toll for your particular itinerary. Check this separately with the motorway operator or its toll information. PienoGo does not calculate tolls. Also allow for the practical time spent finding the pump, queuing, filling and paying.
Compare stops in PienoGo
- Open Plan a trip and enter your start, destination and any planned stops.
- Choose the correct vehicle or fuel, then inspect stations along the route.
- Compare reported prices and the station cards’ extra distance and time. Read any notice that detours have not been verified.
- Check station detail and its last price update, then open Directions when you decide.
Smart Trip adds traffic-aware checks and a recommendation considering price and refreshed detours. It requires an account and uses a monthly allowance. Its driving-time estimates exclude queues and refuelling time. Reported prices come from MIMIT; they are not live pump readings.
Common questions
Is fuel always cheaper outside the motorway?
Do not assume so. Compare suitable stations and the same service type, then include the cost of reaching the alternative.
Does a nearby map marker mean I can enter the station from my carriageway?
No. Check the route and access. Physical closeness does not establish that a station is reachable in your direction of travel.
Should I leave the motorway for a small top-up?
A smaller quantity reduces the possible price saving. Use the litres you actually intend to buy, and weigh the result against the complete diversion and your schedule.
